Exciting!

So exciting!!! They did it! The Boston Red Sox won the World Series, sweeping the Colorado Rockies 4-0!!!

(to be read in your most monotone voice) So boring. They did it again. The Patriots won 52-7.

Something's got to give. The last two weeks haven't even been fun to watch (well... Tommy is always fun to watch, especially when rushing for a touchdown or two).

The Red Sox won the World Series!!

Congratulations to the Red Sox! Although I really really need you to explain a bit about these sports/teams!

Okay, Liz. I'm not sure what you want to know, so here goes.

Within baseball, there are two leagues: The American League and the National League. There are arguments about which league is better, the American League champions having won three of the last four World Series. There are three divisions within each league -- the Eastern Division (Red Sox), the Central Division, and the Western Division (Rockies). The Red Sox are the American League Champions. They went on to play the National League Champions, the Colorado Rockies, in the World Series (it is always the American League Champ vs. the National League Champ in the World Series). The Rockies had an amazing season and were expected to give the Sox a run for their money, but the Sox swept the World Series winning four in a row over the Rockies (best of seven games wins the series).

I'm not sure if this helps you understand any better. If you have any other questions, just let me know. I'm not a big baseball fan (it's pretty boring to watch on tv, but in person it's not bad), but I'll do my best!

Now if you want to know anything else about the 16 million dollar man Tom Brady (yup, that's what he earns this year as QB of the Pats), just let me know!

Congratulations! Enjoy it while it lasts...

And repent, the end is near. November 4, 2007, a day that shall live in infamy. Tommy and the Pats are going down in Indy at the hands of my man, Peyton.

Ooooo, Winston. I'm so scared! You said it out loud, and you know what that means. I won't say it now, but next Tuesday....

Be sure to clean your glasses before Monday night and you'll clearly see how amazing my Tommy is -- in talent and looks!

Good luck to Peyton. He needs it.

Reading your explanation to Liz reminded me of the time many years ago in Pittsburgh when my boss handed me 2 tickets and the keys to the corporate box at Three Rivers Stadium where the Pirates were playing somebody... I was to entertain a mate from Australia who had never seen baseball. We grow up with it and take it for granted.

The questions were so innocent, so simple, that I could not answer except to say, "Because that's the rule."

If a foul ball is a strike on the first 2, why not on the 3rd? Is there a limit on foul balls or could the batter theoretically be up there all night? Fouls in other sports get penalized. Why don't they in baseball? Why didn't the runner slide into first base like that other one did into second?

And then we spent half the night on the infield fly rule which I finally realized I didn't understand either...

Go Braves! OK. Well, then. Maybe next year (huffing off the field, taking her ball and glove with her).

Y'all can go back to talking pro-football now.
