Who Knew?
Who knew that a middle-aged mom could be so cool?
Son: "Mom, can we go to the music store so I can buy a Who CD?"
Me: "Who?"
Son: "The Who. They're a pretty good rock band. I've been listening to them with my friends."
Me: "The Who?"
Son: (sighing) "Yes, mom, they're called The Who."
Me: "Go look at our CDs. There's probably at least one in there."
Son: "The Who?"
Me: "Yes, The Who."
Son: "Really?"
Me: "Yes, really."
Son (after looking): "Mom, I found one. I can't believe you have a Who CD. Pretty cool."
Me: "The CD or me?"
Son: "Well, the CD for sure. You, yeah, I guess you're pretty cool, too."

You'll be way cool when he discovers Chicago, Steppenwolf, The Doobies, etc., or whatever else you have in the old-folks collection.
I remember when the Beatles had that effect on Daughter. Actually each in turn of my children has 'discovered' the Beatles. Younger Son plays them regularly now.
The Who are appearing in Swansea at the beginning of June; I was wondering this morning if I would want to go. If it'll make me cool, I'd better!
Ah, the circle of life! (Though this conversation was beginning to sound a bit like the "Who's on First" routine.) Isn't it gratifying when our children realize that, yes, we were (and are) cool?
Monday morning, 4/15: Hope y'all are OK in all the bad weather...
Winston, ah yes. But sadly, I don't think I've got any Steppenwolf, though in my earlier days I thought I was born to be wild and took my share of magic carpet rides. We survived the storm, but still have a lot to clean up when the weather finally clears.
Liz. My kids recognize the Beatles, but so far have shown no interest. I never saw The Who. I was too scared to go after the trampling deaths of some fans at a concert. I did see Roger Daltry perform with an orchestra many years ago. It was a great show. But Who knew he was so short?
Mary, you know, when I was writing this post that was almost my exact thought, except I thought it sounded like a BAD "Who's on First" routine. It is gratifying when our kids think we're cool. We'll always be cool whether they think so or not. We are the cool generation!
I love those little moments when kids realize their parents have had other things in their lives....cool things. I bet you'll be having a lot more moments like this...it has a way of snowballing once the realization starts. Stay cool Elsie...
